Failure of on-demand transport

On-demand transport is failing:  Kutsaplus in Helsinki, Bridj in Boston, Chariot in San Francisco.  One problem is that it is provided top-down by organisations that don’t know who is going where or when and don’t have communication links with travellers.  This makes it difficult to target user who have potentially compatible journeys.  The result is low vehicle occupancy and the need for unsustainable subsidy.  Should responsibility for developing new transport lie with users, developing it bottom-up rather than providers, top-down?

How is TfGM exploring MaaS – Building on Strong Foundations

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has already run an initial trial for MaaS, wherein a MaaS solution was simulated by back-office staff for a small number of users as a proof-of-concept trial.

This enabled a focus on customer experiences and the impact on travel behaviour rather than the technology. As has been noted elsewhere, the technology behind MaaS is now relatively extant, whilst its potential to change travel behaviour remains less well-explored.

Why is TfGM exploring MaaS – Mobility for the Future City

Greater Manchester is a city which has long been at the forefront of mobility. The world’s first passenger railway ran from Manchester to Liverpool, the UK’s largest tram network spans across the city, whilst Bus Rapid Transit and a significant local and suburban rail system (as well as normal buses) are all part of Manchester’s mobility mix. Yet a large proportion of our journeys are currently made by car, even short ones under 5km, and the resultant congestion places an economic and environmental burden upon the city.

Invitation to a survey about a new mobility concept for Luxembourg and the Greater Region – win prizes by participating!

Dear mobility user,

Sales-Lentz is interested in initiating a new mobility concept in Luxembourg and the greater Region that is called Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS). Before we start the initiation of this concept, we would like to understand your travel behaviour and needs, and your attitudes towards this concept. This will allow us to design the service accordingly.

What is MaaS?

Mobility as a Service is the combination of all sorts of transport into one, easy, simple to use application. We’re working with partners to bring together all different modes across the Luxembourg and the surrounding region; so not just buses and trams but also bicycle and car hire, train travel, taxi and walking.

We know that one of the reasons many people choose a car for trips is that its seen as “the easy option” and so MaaS seeks to make public transport the even easier alternative, combining modes and different operators into one seamless journey.
